It’s that time of year…time for overindulging on turkey and apple pie, and (before you overindulge) the perfect time to reflect on your business partnerships over the past 12 months. What better holiday than Thanksgiving to reach out to your clients, customers and colleagues with a note of thanks for all the ways they contributed to your business success. I like to send Thanksgiving rather than Christmas greetings to my clients and colleagues for a couple of reasons:
1. It really is an ideal time to say “thank you.”
2. My message won’t likely be lost in the sea of Christmas and other holiday greetings that will soon be in everyone’s mailboxes (although I truly appreciate and enjoy those, too!).
If you are considering Thanksgiving greeting cards this year, keep a few things in mind.
Purchase quality greeting cards with colored envelopes
It’s probably too late to order cards to be delivered in time for this Thanksgiving, but you’ll find many of the greeting card companies are now selling packs of 5-8 Thanksgiving greeting cards suitable to send in business and most have colored envelopes. Another option is to check your local art galleries and specialty shops. Many of them carry greeting cards created by local artists and while they may not be specific to Thanksgiving, you’ll probably find some that would be suitable for a greeting of thanks (and you’ll be supporting your local businesses and artists).
Colored envelopes really do stand out in the mail so if you can’t find cards with colored envelopes, you can purchase them separately at just about any office supply store.
Sign your card personally
Yes, this takes time, but time is a gift – and a gift worth sharing with those who’ve helped you in your business over the past year. Adding a personal message is even better, especially when you specifically note why you’re thankful for their business or support.
Not sure what to write? Just Google “Thanksgiving greeting” or “thank you greetings” and I bet you’ll have more than enough ideas to get you started. Programs like Clip Words Pro are great for brainstorming ideas on your own, or call your virtual assistant or other trusted colleague to get the creative juices flowing.
Use a “real” stamp
I know you’re tempted to save time and just run your cards through the postage meter, but envelopes with “real” stamps are more likely to be opened and make your greeting that much more personal. Besides, the great variety of stamps offered through the U.S. Postal Service these days will dress up your envelope – kind of like putting a bow on a present.
If you feel you don’t have time to affix stamps, enlist the help of family members or hire a neighborhood kid to help.
So before you stuff the turkey and settle in for a long winter’s nap (or football game) find some time to acknowledge and thank those who’ve helped your business this year with a personal note or greeting card.
